Bitcoin is the result of hundreds of years of unrelated technological developments that by chance or not, ended up together in a revolutionary project. Although being honest this argument applies to any type of technological innovation, since it is easy to identify the technological path after the innovation, but impossible before it arises. With this note I seek to understand what were the technological pieces that allowed the existence of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is built in top of this fundamental technologies

  1. Digital Signatures: To send, receive tokens with encryption.
  2. The elliptical curve cryptography: Method to encrypt the keys of the signature.
  3. Blockchain: Where all the transactions history is being recorded and stored.
  4. Proof of work: The consensus, transaction and rewards mechanism. Mining.
  5. Open-source software: The code behind the wallets, where you store your tokens.
  6. Internet protocol: Communications standard sets of rules that allow data to be shared.
